Petersham Park is lovely in a “stately grandeur†type of way. It is fairly formal with an avenue of enormous trees, an ornate band stand and a lovely little picket fenced cricket oval where Don Bradman made his first class debut and his first century (in the same match). There’s a beautiful shady BBQ area with tables enough for a few family groups to gather. This spot is particularly popular for children’s birthday parties on weekends.
The park is let down by the playground equipment which is fairly dated. There are a few climbing frames, a small slide, swings and a small roundabout. While kids have fun here, the equipment does not inspire kids to reach new heights and the soft-fall is tan bark which I dislike. The equipment is also a bit worn so you need to check that it’s still safe to use each piece, which is a pity because this park has so much going for it.
Adjacent to this park is the lovely Fanny Durack swimming pool which is great for toddlers.
