Birrarung Marr is well worth a trip into the city to visit. This colourful playground has a great network of decking to run across, slides to zip down and rope structures to clamber up. There's a climbing wall, hammocks, sand, and swings, including a liberty swing for kids in wheelchairs (although vandals destroyed it in June 2013, it will be replaced).

It's hard to describe just how impressive this playground is. Best to go and visit it!

Newcomers to Melbourne should also take in a walk along the Yarra River, a visit to the Artplay building and grab some good food at Federation Square. If you have any energy left then admire some Australian art at the Ian Potter Centre Art Gallery.

This is one of the best playgrounds. My kids love the huge hammock, the walkways, the numerous slides and the sandpit. We often catch the train to the city just to come here, its a cheap and fun day out with the kids. Its spread out over a fairly large area so you have to watch the younger kids or else you lose sight of them.

Unbeatable location and surrounds. Great for toddlers to older kids. Great equipment but also great natural and cultural elements.

Good location if you're in the city! Pity it is visited by grubs at night who leave their mess laying around; really detracts from a nice park!

This is a great playground if you're already in the city and around and exploring Federation Square. There's also currently a pop up patch next to the Federation Square car park so you can check out the fruit and vege.

Park itself had a great assortment of equipment, and grass areas nearby.

Just note the slides are pretty steep and a bit rough on landing.

Lots of challenging equipment for adventurous kids to tackle, I've helped a few random kids up the climbing walls! We love the wobbly rope bridge and the very steep paths beside the slides for encouraging climbing. The only downside is it can be tricky to keep up with kids who tend to bolt, since you often lose sight of them and it's not fenced.
